Keep Your Printer Running Smoothly

A printer that is looked after rarely fails without warning. Most of the faults that reach our bench started weeks earlier as a faint streak, a squeak on the feed roller or a driver that was never updated after an office move. Catching them early is the difference between a ten-minute clean and a replaced fuser unit.

Start with the paper. Humidity swells a ream and curls its edges, and curled paper is the single most common cause of jams in Karachi offices. Keep stock sealed until it goes in the tray, load no more than the tray's marked line, and fan the stack before it goes in so sheets separate cleanly on pickup.

Cartridges deserve the same care. Refilled units vary in quality, and a poorly filled cartridge leaks toner across the drum, which shows up as grey banding down the page. If print quality drops suddenly after a refill, pull the cartridge before running more pages through — toner that spreads inside the machine costs far more to clean out than the cartridge saved.

Cleaning is unglamorous and it works. Wipe the feed rollers with a lint-free cloth and a little water, clear the paper path of fragments after every jam, and keep the vents free of dust. Ten minutes a month on a shared office machine removes most of the calls we get about smudging and misfeeds.

Finally, keep firmware and drivers current, and match the driver to the actual model rather than a close relative. Half of the print-quality complaints we investigate turn out to be a settings mismatch: the wrong paper type selected, draft mode left on, or a duplex setting the machine cannot honour.

When to call a technician

Grinding noises, repeated jams in the same place, error codes that return after a reset, or streaks that survive a cartridge change all point past routine maintenance. At that stage, opening the machine without the right parts usually makes the repair longer.
